Upholstered Headboards: What Fabric Should I Choose?

Upholstered Headboards: What Fabric Should I Choose?

Upholstered headboards have come back into style in a big way, and are great for uniting a room with a lovely fabric to anchor your bed in comfort and style.

When choosing a fabric for upholstered headboards, remember these tips:

Comfort & Material Choices

  • If you like to sit up in bed, choose a fabric for upholstering your headboard that is soft to the hand, like a chenille, polyester, or a velvet.
  • If you prefer a tighter weave fabric for your headboard (like a polyester, cotton, or linen), extra pillows can enhance your comfort.

Fabric Color Choices

  • A neutral color for a headboard can create a subtle backdrop, allowing you to stay flexible in changing up or going bold with your bedding colors.
  • Or, choose a graphic print or bold color for your upholstered headboard: this will do the heavy lifting of a large piece of art, giving visual focus to your space.

Consider Your Pet

If you have a cat that might want to sharpen its claws on your headboard, choose a velvet or a very tight weave to discourage scratching.

Explore Fabrics That Could Work for You

Remember, once upholstered, headboards don’t get the daily wear of a chair or sofa, so they are a great chance to use fabrics that make more of an impact, but which may be too fussy for furniture.

Consider a textured or embroidered fabric, or a textile with novelty elements, to create a truly stunning bed.

Is Linen or 100% Cotton fabric recommended for hotel headboards?

      • Amy Estrin April 28, 2020 at 12:07 pm #

Hi Debbie, For use in a hotel you would definitely want to get a stain guard applied to it! Depending on the density of the weave, the actual wear can be extensive on the correct cotton or linen, however hotel use is pretty intense- you probably know that. There are more forgiving fabrics for hotels. Give me a call if you want to discuss further.

Is Shantung Mid-Weight Fabric okay for a padded headboard?

    • Victoria Robinson November 12, 2019 at 11:23 am #

Hi Abby, unless the fabric is specifically woven for upholstery silk fabric needs to be knit backed prior to using for upholstering.

I’m in the process of making a queen sized headboard. May I get an opinion in regards to using three types of fabric to match my decor and a picture. The colors are chocolate, cream and burgundy. I choose to purchase three fake leather pieces and in addition a cream color upholstery fabric just to add a separate piece to the headboard. What is your opinion using fake leather? If not advised, what do you recommend. I am following a Utube video using cardboard and a flexible type of ply board like that used in dresser drawers. What do you think?

    • Victoria Robinson February 3, 2020 at 4:54 pm #

      Hi Cathy,

Thanks for reaching out. Your project sounds fun! I would suggest that you speak to the people who sold your the fake leather and see if they can provide any information on its durability, as I can only speak to the products that we sell here.

As for the construction of the headboard, again, I cant really speak to the method that you are using as I haven’t tried it myself. But thats the beauty of DIY, you can try all sorts of methods and figure out whats best for you and your particular situation.

      Have fun!
